Summer Road Trip Preparation & Safety Tips

Now that summer has officially arrived, many individuals and families hit the road to embark on long trips to different places throughout the United States. Whether you are taking a road trip across the country or to the next state over, it is imperative to make sure that you are well-prepared in the event of an emergency.

The following are practical safety tips to ensure that your summer road trip is as safe and smooth as possible:

  • Service your vehicle – Routine maintenance, which includes oil changes, tire rotations, tune-ups, and battery checks can give you the peace of mind of knowing that your car is fine-tuned for the long trip. In addition, you won’t have to worry about your car breaking down at some point during the trip.
  • Prepare an emergency roadside kit – In the event that your car breaks down, despite getting it serviced before the trip, pack an emergency roadside kit just in case. Ensure that it contains a car cellphone charger, first aid kit, jumper cables, flashlights, flares, car jack, tire pressure gauge, basic repair tools, emergency blankets, extra clothes, nonperishable foods, and maps.
  • Wear your seatbelt at all times – Every time you drive or ride in a moving vehicle, always buckle up.
  • Remain alert and vigilant – Avoid being distracted while driving by keeping your eyes on the road and hands on the wheel. If you are experiencing fatigue, have one of your passengers take the wheel or stop and stay overnight at a hotel if necessary.
  • Always keep the kids safe – Since heatstroke can occur when you leave a child unattended in a parked car, never leave them alone. Despite having the windows rolled down or the air conditioner on, it is wise not to leave them alone in the car.
  • Be courteous on the road – Warmer climate means the right temperature for doing outdoor activities. Be mindful of motorcyclists, bicyclists, and pedestrians on the streets.
