Classifications of Burn Injuries

Burn injuries are often caused by motor vehicle accidents, workplace incidents, defective products, and other types of accidents. Severe burns over large areas of the body are considered catastrophic, as they prevent victims from maintaining gainful employment.

There are 4 main types of burn injuries:

  1. First-degree burns. These burns affect the outer layer of skin, known as the epidermis. The affected area may appear red and slightly swollen. These burns will often heal quickly without medical treatment.
  2. Second-degree burns. These burns affect the epidermis and the second layer of skin, known as the dermis. The affected area may appear red and swollen, with blisters. Anti-inflammatory medication and cold packs may help heal a second-degree burn.
  3. Third-degree burns. These burns affect both layers of skin and the layer of fat beneath the skin, known as the adipose tissue. The affected area may appear waxy, leathery, and white or tan. Victims may feel no pain because of nerve damage. Immediate medical treatment is necessary.
  4. Fourth-degree burns. These burns affect both layers of skin and the adipose tissue, as well as the bones, organs, and muscles. The affected area may appear blackened or charred, and victims may feel no pain due to nerve damage. Emergency medical treatment is required.

Understanding the Long-Term Effects of a Burn Injury

Burn injuries, particularly third and fourth-degree burns, could cause chronic pain, nerve damage, scarring, disfigurement, and loss of mobility. Victims may face years of treatment, including surgery, medication, and physical therapy. If your burn injury was caused by someone else’s wrongful actions, you may be entitled to a settlement for lost wages, pain and suffering, loss of earning potential, medical bills, emotional distress, and other damages. Punitive damages may also be awarded if the defendant acted with gross negligence or egregious behavior.
